The bottom question is, “why?”

The oil becomes less effective as a lubricant when it is exposed to overheat since it undergoes thermal breakdown due to high operating temperature. Without good quality oil that will serve as a lubricant, the parts of the engine will rub together and can wear and tear each other out. This will result to a low performing engine and will eventually not last. Oil serves many crucial functions and will certainly affect the entire performance of the vehicle. A vehicle with a clean and well-maintained oil and oil filter performs way better than those with dirty and unmanaged filters. Changing the oil and the oil filter is considered to be a basic requirement and will only cost you smaller amount compared to bringing your car to a shop for a major repair. Car oils also contain additives that can function as neutralizer for acids. As the vehicle and engines are being used, these additives are becoming less effective. In addition to the benefits of oil, it can also function as water, dust and combustion absorbent which will also become less effective as it is continuously used.

In performing this maintenance, you will need an oil-filter wrench which comes with two sizes of socket-style cap wrench. One is built-in to an oil-filter; the other is to a 3/8 inch drive breaker bar handle. Between intervals, one is also expected to check the level of oil every period of reaching 100 miles. One can check the oil level by parking one’s car in an even surface and removing the dipstick.  The dipstick shows the engine’s oil level. Once it reaches the MIN level, it means that the level of oil has already reached the minimum level and that is not a good sign. Afterwards, the dipstick should be cleaned then be re-inserted after checking the oil level. Ideally, the oil level should be maintained at the full mark. If it is already below the minimum, it means that you should add  a quart of oil to the crankcase to maintain the same performance of the vehicle.

Things to Consider:

  1. The dipstick may take time showing and reflecting your oil level since the oil flows slowly especially when it is cool. One should give it a day or two to check and recheck the readings which your dipstick has provided you.
  1. Overfilling your car’s crankcase should also be prevented since it can result for your car to whip your oil into fizz or bubbles which can’t get toil to the parts of the engine that needs lubrication. This will be one of the reasons for you to make your mechanic happy since this will give him a chance to fix your car and charge you an amount that will surely break your heart. Adding oil is needed if you are low with it. However, always consider your manual to know what type of oil is recommended instead of adding any grade of engine motor oil which you preferred.
